Samitivej Liver and Digestive Institute

Samitivej Liver and Digestive Institute

Samitivej also specializes in cutting edge and tertiary treatments such as liver transplants. Today, liver transplants have a success rate of over 90% and most patients are able to resume their normal activities after recovering from the surgery.

Samitivej has entered into collaboration with Sano Hospital, a world leader in diseases of the GI tract and the classification of epithelial tissue, particularly in patients with abnormal epithelial tissue such as colonic polyps, colon cancer and stomach cancer. The two hospitals have also launched a medical exchange program providing an opportunity for Samitivej doctors to study innovative medical techniques from their counterparts in Japan.
Samitivej has adopted Narrow–Band Imaging (NBI) International Colorectal Endoscopic classification (NICE) with magnification. This technology uses specific wavelengths of green and blue light to enhance the details and other obscure aspects of a gastrointestinal endoscopy. The efficacy of colon cancer screening is increased by offering the following benefits:

  • Enables earlier identification of colorectal diseases, even in the absence of physical tumors
  • Provides more accurate diagnoses leading to more precise treatments
  • Shortens medical procedures, promotes faster recovery and reduces complications, with no need for patients to stay at the hospital
  • If abnormalities are detected, biopsies can be taken safely, without the need for unnecessary surgery
The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) has determined quality indicators for colonoscopy in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, which include cecal intubation success rate, average colonoscopy withdrawal time and adenoma detection rate (ADR). All standards have been met by Samitivej hospital, with ADR especially exceeding the standard. Overall ADR is recommended to be 25%. A higher ADR indicates an endoscopist who examines colons adequately and detects polyps effectively. Samitivej’s current ADR (updated in 2015) is at 36.4% vs. 25% industry average (as laid out by The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy) and increasing after applying the NBI with magnification technique. We are thrilled that this innovative technique has raised the standards of our practice even higher. Currently, Samitivej Hospital is performing around 2,600 colonoscopies per year with no cases of complications during or after the procedure (2016).

Part of our holistic approach includes the extra care provided by our medical personnel. For difficult treatments, each patient will be assigned a Case Manager. This is a nurse who has a complete understanding of their case and the importance of the care they are receiving. Learn more about the experience of our Case Managers here.

The Liver and Digestive Institute uses the latest medical innovations and technologies. We are equipped with a team of specialists who draw from years of training and experience both in Thailand and abroad to provide Thai, expatriate and international patients with the most accurate diagnoses and best treatment plans for a variety of liver–related diseases and digestive ailments. Located on the second floor of Samitivej Chinatown Hospital.
